In 1542, the Portuguese arrived in Taiwan and named it Formosa, “beautiful island.” Colonization aside, the Taiwanese are very proud of this nickname and continue to reference it. In the 1980’s, our parents left their Formosa for California. We honor all the storied immigrants out there that sought after their own beautiful islands of opportunity.
